Basketball: Kiwi NBA star Steven Adams showcases extraordinary appetite

There's only one thing that Steven Adams likes more than basketball - and that's eating.

The Kiwi NBA star is almost as prodigious with a knife and fork as he is with his interior defence, and tales of his capacity to consume have reached legendary status among teammates.

The latest evidence of his meal-time exploits comes from Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook.

Westbrook captured Adams in an Instagram post, filling his 2.13m (7ft), 113kg frame with a feast fit for a small family.

"Bro, you cannot eat that much," Westbrook said, as he marvelled at the array of dishes sitting in front of his teammate.

Unfazed, Adams responded with nothing, but his trademark smirk, before getting back to business.

It was just another day at the office for Adams, who's known to routinely order two appetisers and two main courses at dinnertime.

According to MassLive.com reporter Fred Katz, the Rotorua-native once ordered two whole fish while at a restaurant. After both came out without heads, he asked if they could bring him out a plate of the unused fish heads, which he presumed were just lying around in the kitchen.

Biographer Madeleine Chapman also wrote of his prowess at the dining table, recounting the time he ordered two "giant" bowls of chicken noodle soup on a night out, then moved on to a different restaurant for the main course.

"I imagined my stomach as a bottomless pit, able to hold vast quantities of food, despite never having done it before that night," Chapman wrote for The Spinoff.

"Steven inhaled his second dinner and jokingly assessed his glass of wine. He talked about how Spurs coach Gregg Popovich loves his wine and how one day they were going to bond over a full-bodied red.

"I listened and wondered why my pile of pasta didn’t seem to be getting any smaller."
