Boxing: Joseph Parker to make NZ return in Christchurch in December

Kiwi boxer Joseph Parker will make his return to the boxing ring in December, as he attempts to work his way back up the heavyweight ranks.

The 26-year-old heavyweight will return to the ring at Christchurch's Horncastle Arena on December 15, with an opponent to be announced in the coming weeks.

The fight will be his first in New Zealand in 18 months.

Parker has suffered back-to-back defeats in Britain this year, losing his WBO belt to Anthony Joshua in April and then on the wrong end of another decision against Dillian Whyte in July.

He is determined to show he can still compete against the best heavyweights in the world.

"Whoever they put in front of me, I need to get the job done - and get it done well," said Parker.

"Having experienced what it is like to reach the pinnacle of the sport and then come back down again after a couple of tough defeats, I'm more motivated than ever to get back on top."

Parker's trainer, Kevin Barry, said he needed a "top performance".

"After a five-year undefeated run that took Joseph all the way to winning the WBO world title, we now find ourselves in very unusual territory - coming off back-to-back losses," Barry said.

"Joe has never been in this position before and needs a top performance."

The undercard will feature fellow top heavyweight Junior Fa and welterweight Bowyn Morgan, while seven-time New Zealand amateur champion Dawn Chalmers will face current New Zealand Muay Thai champion Michaela Jenkins in a thrilling female contest.
