November will mark 10 years since Nathan Cayless wrote his name into rugby league folklore by captaining the Kiwis to World Cup glory.
It's fitting then that he's back with the team as part of new coach Michael Maguire's rebuild job.
- Mitchell won't be showing any respect for 'good mate' Manu
- Watene-Zelezniak named Kiwis captain for Kangaroos test
Despite recent woes, Cayless believes the current squad's got what it takes to return to the top of the game.
"It feels like yesterday but the game's changed a lot - wonderful moment for the country and everyone involved and something I will cherish forever," Cayless said.
After a disastrous World Cup exit for the Kiwis last year, Cayless believes they've got the formula right to get be back to the top of rugby league's mountain under Michael Maguire's leadership.
"It's a real rebuilding of the team and that's what Michael Maguire's working on," Cayless said.
"He's really keen to take this team to the World Cup in 2021 and be victorious over there.
And the 40-year-old is putting a chance of success this weekend down to the reintroduction of experienced players like Jesse Bromwich, who missed rugby league's show piece in 2017 through suspension.
"Jesse's first training today and it's probably the best session that we've had - just the confidence and the aura that he carries."
But Cayless hasn't had to call on his own success to motivate the team.
"It's not required," Cayless said. "These guys know what it's like to taste victory as well."
A taste the kiwis are desperate to have again.
