Blackcaps vs Pakistan: Cricketing world applauds instant-classic test win

If social media is any indication, the rest of the world is as stunned as we are over the Blackcaps' miraculous first-test victory over Pakistan at Abu Dhabi.

The NZ side looked dead and buried at lunch of the fourth day, when their hosts needed just 46 runs to win, with six wickets in hand.

But a stunning collapse - Pakistan lost their last five wickets for 23 runs - saw the Blackcaps emerge with a thrilling four-run victory that captured the imagination of fans - and their cricketing colleagues - around the globe.

The result represented the fifth-closest test win in history and New Zealand's 175 runs were the second-lowest score they've successfully defended.

"Great game of cricket," tweeted former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi. "Test-match cricket is a fascinating format.

"Congratulations New Zealand on a remarkable win! Well fought Pakistan… the team will bounce back from here."

Indian master blaster Virender Sehwag also applauded the NZ victory.

"Well done @BLACKCAPS," he tweeted. "What a great fightback and a memorable test match - test is best!"

The performance also caught the attention of England test bowler Stuart Broad.

"Caught the last 30 mins. So tense! Test cricket at its best!"

And the Blackcaps weren't far from the thoughts of former coach Mike Hesson, whose successor Gary Stead is leading his first campaign at the helm.

"You little beauty lads," Hesson posted.

Indian great VVS Laxman praised the team's determination against the odds.

"A test match to remember for a long time," he said. "An outstanding effort from New Zealand to win this, after being out of the game for so long.

"Their never-say-die attitude is so wonderful, and test cricket is well and truly alive."

The second of three tests begins at Dubai on Saturday.
