Cricket: Trent Boult leads Blackcaps' fightback in opening Pakistan test

Inspirational bowling from Trent Boult has lifted the Blackcaps back into contention against on the second day of the first test against Pakistan.

New Zealand slumped to 153 all-out in Abu Dhabi on day one, but they bounced back on day two, dismissing Pakistan for 227 shortly after tea on Saturday.

Captain Kane Williamson (27) and opener Jeet Raval (26) guided the Blackcaps to 56/1 at stumps in Abu Dhabi.

Pakistan started day two of the test on 59/2, and in the 14th over of the day Ish Sodhi struck to remove Haris Sohail (38). Azhar Ali (22) departed the following over as Boult claimed his second victim.

Asad Shafiq hit five fours and a six in his 43 as an 83-run partnership with the watchful Babar Azam (62) saw Pakistan take control at 174/4.

Boult then took the wicket of Shafiq, and Pakistan lost their remaining five wickets for just 53 runs as they reached 227, a lead of 74.

Boult finished with figures of 4/54, while Ajaz Patel and Colin de Grandhomme took two wickets each.

Neil Wagner claimed his 150th test wicket when the left-arm seamer dismissed Yasir Shah for nine.

The Blackcaps' second innings got off to a woeful start when Tom Latham departed for a golden duck in the second over, but Williamson and Patel built a strong partnership to leave them trailing by 18 runs heading into day three.
