There were scary scenes on the home straight at Addington Raceway on Friday as a driver and his horse were involved in a freak three-horse crash.
Canterbury harness racing driver Terry Chimel was flung metres in the air after the horse he was driving hit the back of a rival horse on the first lap of the fifth race.
Fortunately, Chimel landed on his feet and broke his fall, rather than his back or head.
He was taken to hospital with a suspected ankle injury.
The race was called off due to safety concerns but was held 30 minutes later, after all the horses were checked by vets.
All three of the horses - Divinia Bellezza, First Class Lady and Held to Ransom didn’t race in the second running.
None of the horses involved in the accident were seriously injured.
