New Zealand jockey Michael Walker has secured a ride in Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup at Flemington.
Walker booked his ticket, when he rode English horse A Prince of Arran to victory during Saturday's last-chance Lexus Stakes.
The Kiwi deprived countrymen Chris Waller (trainer) and James McDonald (jockey), pipping Brimham Rocks by half a length.
"He [the horse] did well,” Walker said. “I actually hit the front too early."
He hit the lead with 300 metres to go and was able to hold off the run of Brimham Rocks and Jaameh.
"I'm looking forward to Tuesday, I've got a ride now." Walker said.
Trainer Charlie Fellowes said: "This was our derby, this was the race we needed to win.
"Anything from here on in is a bonus."
"Plans don’t often come off like they did here,” said Fellowes."I can't believe we're in the big one on Tuesday."
The Melbourne Cup field will be finalised on Saturday evening.
