German Formula One driver Nico Hulkenberg has emerged unscathed from a horror crash at the start of the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Monday morning (NZ time).
Hulkenberg's Renault flipped on the opening lap and was sent tumbling into the barriers, eventually settling upside down, after colliding with French driver Romain Grosjean.
Flames could be seen coming from the back of the Renault and Hulkenberg ordered his team to get him out on his car's radio.
"Get me out," Hulkenberg yelled. "There is fire. There is fire."
Race stewards quickly put the fire out, and the 31-year-old eventually got out of the car when the car flipped back onto its four wheels.
Grosjean was not penalised for his role in the incident, and he later contacted his team to enquire as to Hulkenberg's status.
"I feel very sorry for him but there was nowhere I could go," he said.
The race was won by Britain's Lewis Hamilton, claiming his 11th win of the year ahead of Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel, and Max Verstappen in third.
Kiwi Brendon Hartley finished 12th in what could be his last race in the Formula 1, as his future with Toro Rosso remains in limbo.
