Black Ferns Sevens lift Lonsdale Cup for Olympic excellence

The Black Ferns Sevens have capped a memorable year by winning the prestigious Lonsdale Cup.

The New Zealand Olympic Committee awards the prize for the most outstanding contribution to an Olympic or Commonwealth Games sport.

The Kiwi women won Commonwealth Games gold in the most dramatic of fashions, with an end-to-end try to Kelly Brazier stealing the gold medal from under Australia's noses with time expired.

They made a near-sweep of the remainder of the season, also winning the World Cup and five World Series events to go along with it.

"It's an incredible honour," said stand-out Tyla Nathan-Wong. "We're just so grateful to be able to play the sport we love and do it on the world stage.

"We've had pretty awesome success this year, but looking at this cup and actually reading the names from the past who have won it, it's amazing and we're blown away."

Previous winners of the cup include field athetes Tom Walsh and Valerie Adams, while canoeist Lisa Carrington has won the past two years.
