English Premier League club Chelsea FC have suspended four people from attending any further matches while an investigation into alleged racial abuse of Raheem Sterling takes place.
The Manchester City forward was on the receiving end of an alleged racially motivated verbal barrage from a selection of fans during Chelsea's 1-0 win over City on Sunday morning (NZT).
Chelsea have confirmed they are 'fully supporting' an ongoing police investigation.
In a statement the club said evidence of racist behaviour will result in severe sanctions, including bans.
"Chelsea Football Club finds all forms of discriminatory behaviour abhorrent," the statement continued, adding that the club "will also fully support any criminal prosecutions".
Sterling's club has welcomed the police in involvement and backed the London clubs stance on potentially handing out long-term bans.
"Manchester City and Raheem are committed to working with all relevant parties and organisations to support the objective of eradicating racism from the game."
Sterling said he "had to laugh" when he heard the remarks because he expects "no better".
A subsequent social media post from the England international saw him question the way the British media portrays black players.
