Football: Preston goalkeeper Declan Rudd makes a horrendous howler

Preston North End goalkeeper Declan Rudd has produced a moment of madness that could be one of the worst mistakes in footballing history.

Early in the second half in their Championship clash against Birmingham, defender Maikel Kieftenbeld tried playing the ball forward, but he overplayed the pass, and the ball bounced towards Rudd.

The Preston keeper stopped and bent down to collect the ball, but it took an unfortunate bounce and went straight between his legs and into the net.

Kieftenbeld appeared stunned, and was somewhat reluctant to celebrate his first goal of the season.

Birmingham went on to win 3-0 at St Andrew's as Jacques Maghoma and Che Adams went onto score for the Blues.

Preston manager Alex Neil refused to blame Rudd's howler for the loss.

"He made a mistake. It cost us the first goal, but we could then go and repair it, which we didn't do. There is a lot more that went wrong than that mistake.

"I don't really need to say much to Declan. To be honest with you, I didn't even see it. The ball went over the defender, and I turned to follow the ball up the pitch.

"As a professional player, you know you made a mistake and you need to let it go. There is nothing you can do about it now.

"It was a really bad day at the office for us, and I think the most disappointing thing was that towards the end it didn't look like we had that belief to get ourselves back into the game."
