Hong Kong Sevens: New Zealand reach quarter-finals despite loss to Fiji

The All Blacks Sevens will face France in the Hong Kong quarter-finals after qualifying in second place in Pool C behind defending tournament champions Fiji.

After scoring pool play wins over Australia (40-19) and Kenya (36-0), New Zealand were no match for the rampant Fijians as they went down 24-5 in their final pool match on Saturday.

Before the match, Fiji's captain Kalione Nasoko presented All Blacks Sevens skipper Scott Curry with a local Fijian treasure to show their respects following last month's Christchurch terror attacks.

On the field it was one-way traffic as Fiji, who are aiming to capture a fifth-straight title in Hong Kong, led 19-0 at the break with tries from Aminiasi Tuimaba, Vilimoni Botitu and Livai Koroigasagasa.

Substitute Apenisa Cakaubalavu broke through for the fourth try in the second half, before Joseva Ravouvou got New Zealand a consolation try in the final two minutes.

Earlier against Kenya, Ravouvou and Regan Ware both grabbed doubles while Curry and Joe Webber also scored tries.

In the other quarter-final matchups, South Africa will play the United States, England will face Manu Samoa, and Fiji will be up against Argentina.

New Zealand's match against France will take place at 4:07pm.
