Football: Dominant New Zealand winning in style at FIFA U20 World Cup

Former All White Fred de Jong says the scorelines are only telling half the story when it comes to the stunning performances of the New Zealand side at the FIFA U-20 Football World Cup.

It's been a near-perfect tournament for the Kiwis so far, with two impressive wins to book a spot in the knockout stages in Poland.

De Jong has revelled not only in the victories, but the manner in which they've been achieved.

"It's not a case of us sneaking a win," De Jong told Newshub. "We're dominating games.

"We can hold the ball now. We've got players that are technically more able. The style of play is more conducive to maintaining the initiative and momentum in games and, crucially, we're putting the ball in the back of the net."

In a tight match, New Zealand had to wait for their chance to come. But when it did, it was a moment worth savouring, as Gianni Stensness blasted a rocket into the side netting from 25 yards.

While the second went down as an Norwegian own goal, coach Des Buckingham felt it was every bit deserved.

"To play the way we have there to get the result with two clean sheets," Buckingham noted. "That's something we haven't done before."

A draw or a win in their next match against Uruguay and they'll become the first New Zealand side to top their pool at a FIFA World Cup.
