Super Rugby 2019: Desperate Chiefs hold on to beat Reds in Hamilton

The Chiefs have welcomed back Sam Cane to the starting 15 with a 19-13 win over the Reds in Hamilton.

In his first start in seven months after recovering from a broken neck, Cane had a standout night - hitting as hard as ever and winning turnovers for his side in a strong 50 minutes for the hosts.

Both sides were denied tries in the opening 10 minutes.

The Reds were called back for a double movement and the Etene Nanai-Seturo was said to have knocked the ball on while scoring what would have been the match's first try.

The first try came three minutes later, Pita Gus Sowakula scoring his maiden try for the Hamilton-based side after a bruising run getting rid of three players.

The hosts scored their second try in the 23rd minute after a long build-up prop Atu Moli scored to take the score to 12-3.

The Reds had a second try disallowed after hooker Alex Mafi was called for a double movement.

Etene Nanai-Seturo got revenge on his no-call from earlier in the game, scoring a great try just before the break. Great work from the backline sent the winger over to take the score out to 19-6 at half-time.

The visitors flicked a switch as they started the second half, dominating on the ball - controlling 83% of possession in the final 40 minutes.

Taniela Tupou scored the opening try for the visitors in the 56th minute after working the ball over 15 phases, making the score 19-13.

The Reds then set up shop in the Chiefs half - dominating every facet of the game for the final 15 minutes.

The Chiefs showed desperate defence and made 238 tackles, some heroic work from Tyler Ardron and Lachlan Boshier saw the Chiefs hold out the surging Reds and claim a famous six-point win to keep their season alive.
