Cricket World Cup: Blackcaps beat Afghanistan by seven wickets

The Blackcaps have maintained their perfect record at this year's Cricket World Cup with a seven-wicket win over Afghanistan in Taunton.

James Neesham was the shining light, the 28-year-old taking career-best figures of 5/31 off his 10 overs to claim the man-of-the-match honour.

Captain Kane Williamson once again won the toss and sent Afghanistan into bat at the County Ground.

Matt Henry and Trent Boult struggled with the new balls as the slightly green pitch offered nothing for the opening bowlers.

Afghanistan opening batsmen Hazratullah Zazai (34) and Noor Ali Zadran (31) were on top after the power play, but Neesham came on and flipped the game on its head alongside speedster Lockie Ferguson - the pair taking three wickets in nine balls to take the score to 66/3.

From there, the runs slowed up and the wickets kept tumbling - Neesham claiming the wickets of Zazai, Rahmat Shah (0), Gulbadin Naib (4), Mohammad Nabi (9) and Najibullah Zadran (4).

Hashmatullah Shahidi showed some fight with the bat, scoring 59 off 99 balls, but was the final wicket of the innings - Ferguson claiming 4/37 off 9.1 overs.

The innings was a big collapse from the Afghanistan side - going from 66 without loss to all-out for 172, something which has been a theme of their tournament so far.

In reply, many Kiwis wouldn't have had the milk in their coffee's by the time Martin Guptill was out, dismissed off the first ball of the innings.

He edged a ball from Aftab Alam into his pads and was then caught at point by Zadran.

Colin Munro showed glimpses of promise with some lovely driving down the ground before he fell softly for 22, hitting a short ball straight to Hamid Hassan at third man off the bowling of Alam.

Captain Williamson and Ross Taylor salvaged the innings for the Blackcaps, putting on 89 runs for the third wicket in a match-winning partnership.

Williamson battled in the early stages of his innings, before settling down to score a well-crafted 79 not out off 99 balls.

Both batsmen were solid throughout, rotating the strike and punishing the bad balls.

Taylor eventually fell for 48 with his side needing just 43 runs to win.

Tom Latham joined the skipper at the crease as they saw the Kiwis home.

The win sees the Blackcaps go to the top of the table. They will face India on Thursday, June 20 (NZ time).
