Kiwi driver Scott Dixon crashed out of the latest IndyCar race in Detroit, slamming into a tire wall on Sunday (NZ time).
In the rain-affected race, Dixon was third with 30 minutes remaining when he clipped the inside wall and slid into the tires at turn six, which forced him to retire.
The last time Dixon failed to finish a race was two years ago at the Texas Motor Speedway - 32 races ago.
The start was delayed more than an hour after a thunderstorm moved through the area. The race was shortened from its scheduled 70 laps to a 75-minute timed race, with 43 laps completed when the checkered flag waved.
American Josef Newgarden went onto win, propelling him to the top of the drivers' championship. Compatriot Alexander Rossi was second and Japan's Takuma Sato third.
Honda driver Dixon sits 92 points behind Newgarden in the standings in fifth.
Dixon will have the chance to avenge his disappointment on Monday with a second race scheduled at The Raceway on Belle Isle, before the series moves to Texas next weekend.
