Kiwi driver Scott Dixon had his hopes of a podium finish at the IndyCar race in Texas on Sunday (NZT) dashed by a crash with 17 laps remaining.
But Dixon admitted he had nobody to blame but himself for the incident, which occurred when he attempted to close down an overtaking manoeuvre by Colton Herta that resulted in the two cars touching.
The crash ended the race for both drivers, and Dixon was immediately apologetic.
"I started to track down," he said post-race. "Sorry, it was my fault ... it ended both our days."
Rookie Herta said Dixon had apologised to him personally for the move he also deemed unnecessary.
"He didn't need to do it," Herta said. "The outside lane was there, he could have run the outside lane.
Josef Newgarden capitalised on the incident to extend his lead in first place and ultimately claimed the chequered flag.
Dixon currently sits fourth in the championship standings.
