Netball: NZ Men's team enjoy spotlight after beating Silver Ferns

The NZ Men's netball team is enjoying the limelight, after beating the Silver Ferns in their first televised match-up.

The males beat their female counterparts 54-50 in a hard-fought clash in Auckland, with 2.18m (7ft 2in) goal shooter Junior Levi scoring 48 goals from 52 attempts.

While they've played the women often behind closed doors in training, this was the first time their encounter had been open to public scrutiny.

The result came a day after they beat the Fijian women's team 94-19.

Coach David Pala'amo told The AM Show the result was a great advertisement for the men's game.

"It was a new experience for us on live TV," he said. "The boys were nervous and the Ferns are used to that arena.

"It gave men's netball, not only in New Zealand, but around the world... showed that men can play netball. Some people's view of how men play netball is that they're bullies and they play rough, but last night showed that we have a skilful team.

"The ultimate goal is to push men's netball around the world. There were a lot of people watching the game globally, in Jamaica, England South Africa.

"It is about making men's netball more aware."

The NZ Men now sit atop the quad-series table with two wins from two games and look set to feature in the final on Saturday afternoon.

The men will face the NZ All-Stars on Friday, while the Silver Ferns will play the Fiji Pearls.
