Super Rugby 2019: Hurricanes back to full strength for quarter-final with Bulls

The message from assistant coach Jason Holland is clear and somewhat predictable - the Hurricanes will sticking to the tried and true for their quarter-final clash with the Bulls in Wellington.

The men from the capital have won three straight games and seem to be peaking at the opportune time, heading into the first week of the playoffs.

"There's a real temptation to come up with bits of magic in a playoff game," said Holland. "But I think we've learnt in the past that you do the simple things well in big games and you get results.

"We'll tweak a few things, but it's basically around what we do well to win games and that's what we're going to concentrate on all week."

Further helping their cause, Holland expects full availability of his first-choice players.

After fielding a virtual second-string side in the win over the Blues, he confirmed all hands would be on deck at Westpac Stadium on Saturday, including wing Wes Goosen, whose outlook he deemed "pretty positive", after missing the last two weeks with a hamstring issue.

Holland anticipated the Bulls would be potential quarter-final opponents two weeks ago, and has already done a fair amount of due diligence on what he calls a "typical South African side".

"They're big boys, so we have to meet them at set piece and around their carry. We'll have a little look at that, but we want to worry about what we do well."

The Hurricanes only need to look back a few weeks to their performances in comprehensive wins over both the Lions and Sharks, with Holland regards as a rough blueprint on how to deal with the power-based game of the men from Pretoria.

"We had a pretty good plan when we went to Africa a couple of weeks ago and it worked," Holland noted. "We'll look to pull the positives out of what we did over there and apply them to the Bulls."
