Cricket World Cup 2019: Blackcap Jimmy Neesham pays tribute to coach who died during final

Blackcaps all-rounder Jimmy Neesham has paid tribute to his high school coach, who died during the Cricket World Cup final against England at Lord's.

Dave Gordon passed away, aged 75, surrounded by family and friends, as Neesham was at the crease for New Zealand's 'super over'.

On Thursday, Neesham tweeted a touching comment to honour his former Auckland Grammar coach.

"Dave Gordon, my high school teacher, coach and friend. Your love of this game was infectious, especially for those of us lucky enough to play under you. How appropriate you held on until just after such a match. Hope you were proud. Thanks for everything. RIP."

In a published death notice, family said Gordon "knocked his final six out of the park during the super-over of the Cricket World Cup final, 15 July 2019 after a short illness, aged 75".

Neesham was one of the Blackcaps' better performers at the World Cup, scoring 232 runs, including an unbeaten 97 against Pakistan, while taking 15 wickets with the ball, including 5/31 against Afghanistan.
