Laura McGoldrick's heartwarming thank you to husband Martin Guptill after Cricket World Cup defeat

The wife of Blackcaps batsman Martin Guptill has posted a beautiful 'thank you' on Instagram, saying how proud she is of his achievements.

Broadcaster Laura McGoldrick posted the photo of herself, her husband and their two-year-old daughter outside Lord's on Tuesday evening.

"My Gup, to watch you and this team conduct yourself the way you did throughout the campaign was a real privilege," she wrote.

"Thank you for showing our girl how to keep getting up and to keep working hard."

She said the journey hadn't been an easy one.

"We've laughed, we've cried and we have created some incredible memories that I will treasure for the rest of my life. Thank you [Martin], you are and always will be my champion. What a ride!"

Guptill and his NZ teammates battled England to a standstill in the Cricket World Cup final, tying on runs after 50 overs each and still deadlocked after a 'super over' playoff.

The final act of the game saw Guptill run out, while desperately attempting the winning run.

The host team eventually prevailed after a countback of boundaries - fours and sixes - during the match, leaving many fans around the world questioning the fairness of awarding the trophy on that basis.

Comments on McGoldrick's post were supportive of the family, thanking Guptill for his hard work.

"Well played. You won our hearts. Much love from Bangladesh," wrote one person.

"You and the team have shown the cricket world the true spirit of sportsmanship. Feel proud because WOW we do!" wrote another.
