Ashes 2019: David Warner gets sandpaper send-off in Ashes opener

David Warner and Cameron Bancroft experienced a challenging return to test cricket as they were both dismissed inside the first 10 overs of the first Ashes Test at Edgbaston.

Having served 12 and nine-month bans respectively for their roles in the Sandpaper scandal last year in Cape Town, the opening batsman walked out to the crease to a vocal reception of booing.

After facing 14 balls Warner was dismissed in the fourth over, and as he walked off the pitch, fans responded with a wave of sandpaper sheets waved high above them in celebration.

The cheers were even louder when replays showed that Warner was wrongly given out as Stuart Broad's delivery was going to miss the stumps.

Four overs later, Bancroft followed after edging to England captain Joe Root in the slips for eight, giving Broad his second wicket of the day in only his fourth over.

When former captain Steve Smith, who was also banned for 12 months for his role in 'sandpaper-gate', the crowd also booed.

But the boos didn't phase Smith, who rescued Australia from 122/8 to 284 all out.

England then reached 10/0 when play ended for the day.
