Kiwi cyclist Patrick Bevin has fallen agonisingly short of a historic medal at the World Road Cycling Championships in Yorkshire on Thursday (NZ time).
The 28-year-old had to settle for fourth in the individual time trial, finishing just 2.16s off the podium.
Bevin's fourth-place is New Zealand's best-ever result in the men's time trial.
Australian Rohan Dennis successfully defended his world title, finishing ahead of Belgian Remco Evenepoel, with Italy's Filippo Ganna in third.
While Bevin was disappointed to have missed out on a podium finish, the Taupo rider was pleased to improve on his eighth placing in Innsbruck last year.
"It was disappointing to fall short of the podium, as that was my goal but at the end of the day, fourth is fourth," he told Newshub.
"I'm happy to be fourth in the world, and my goal is to keep improving."
Bevin will have his final race of the year in Sunday's road race before turning his attention to the Tokyo Olympics.
