Mitre 10 Cup: Mako remain perfect with win over Taranaki

Tasman have maintained their perfect record in the Mitre 10 Cup, with a 28-13 win over Taranaki.

The Mako scored first at Yarrow Stadium, after Mitch Hunt put in a pinpoint cross-field kick and Tima Fainga'anuku gathered to score.

Two penalties from Daniel Waite saw the hosts hit the lead, but a 37th-minute try from Andrew Makalio saw the Mako take the lead.

Fainga'anuku scored a carbon copy of the opening try on the stroke of half-time, catching a Hunt cross-kick to take the lead to 18-6 at half-time.

Lachlan Boshier opened the scoring in the second half for the hosts in an open game full of running rugby by both sides.

Neither side could find the try-line over the next 15 minutes, until halfback Finlay Christie scampered over for the Mako, taking the lead out to 28-13.

The Bulls weren't done yet. Waisake Naholo scored with 15 minutes to go to give the home side a chance, but the Mako held on to win 28-18.

Tasman will travel to Pukekohe to take on Counties Manukau on Friday and Taranaki will take on Otago for the Ranfurly Shield.
