Motorsport: Nurse says Michael Schumacher 'conscious' after cutting edge stem-cell treatment

Michael Schumacher's condition is believed to have stabilised, after undergoing a secret treatment at a French hospital.

The German Formula One legend has had years of intensive care and treatment, after a horrific skiing accident in 2013, but little has been known about his condition - until now.

A man known for pushing the limits, Schumacher is still displaying the fighting spirit that made him a racing champion.

Schumacher retired in 2012, but suffered a near-fatal brain injury while skiing in the French Alps a year later.

The 50-year-old's condition has been shrouded in secrecy for six years, his wife giving a rare update on his 50th birthday in January.

"He is in the very best hands," she wrote. "[They] are doing everything humanly possible to help him."

CRC Motorsport host Shaun Summerfield says: "It's been incredible because it's been like a news vacuum for the last six years."

"As to where he is, word that he is talking, is he moving... what's happening?"

On Thursday, news surfaced that Schumacher has undergone cutting-edge treatment in Paris.

A local newspaper reported that Schumacher had received stem-cell transfusions to reduce inflammation.

"Yes, he is in my service," a nurse at the Paris cardiology unit confirmed. "And I can assure you that he is conscious.

"It's fair to say he was known for some of his miracles, especially driving in the wet... so if he can be part of one here, that'd be awesome," says Summerfield.

The racing fraternity is now daring to dream once again - that Schumacher is about to pull off his greatest comeback yet.
