Supercars: Kiwi Scott McLaughlin released from hospital after Gold Coast crash

Kiwi Supercars driver Scott McLaughlin has been released from hospital after undergoing precautionary tests following his crash at the Gold Coast 600 on Sunday.

During qualifying, McLaughlin's Ford Mustang hit the inside kerb at 140km/h at the tough concrete wall-lined street circuit and ended up on its side on turn four.

The defending Supercars champion climbed out of the car unscathed, however, the same couldn't be said for his Mustang which has been written off.

McLaughlin passed medical checks at the circuit but was later transferred to hospital after showing signs of delayed concussion.

Supercars medical chief Dr Carl Le said the 26-year-old would have further tests before the Sandown 500 in a fortnight.

He's now been given a final all-clear and discharged from hospital.

"Scott [McLaughlin] has had further tests including an MRI at the Gold Coast University hospital and been given the all-clear," said Le.

"He is in good spirits and is heading home with his fiancée Karly. He will be reviewed at Sandown but is expected to be fit to race there."

McLaughlin described the crash as the "biggest shunt" of his career.

The force of the crash was revealed to be 42.7G.

"That was the biggest shunt of my career, and its testament to the work put into these cars that I was able to walk away," McLaughlin wrote on Instagram.

"Thanks to all the marshals and officials that helped me, and to Dr Carl and the Supercars medical team. Thanks to Shane too for stopping and checking on me.

"Because of the size of the crash, I had to go to hospital and have a few tests, but I've been given the all-clear so now I'm looking forward to getting back on track again.

"I'm sorry to my team, they're going to have to put in some hard yards over the next week or so to get us ready for Sandown, but they are the best in the business, so I'm sure we'll be good as new in two weeks."

Kiwi rival Shane van Gisbergen went onto win Sunday's race at Surfers Paradise, and the Holden driver cut McLaughlin's series lead from 613 to 463 points going into the final two rounds.

McLaughlin'sFord outfit DJR Team Penske will need to build a new Mustang ahead of the three races at Sandown.
