Australian spearhead Pat Cummins has run riot against New Zealand at the MCG with an excellent five-wicket haul.

Despite comfortably being world cricket's leading Test wicket-taker this year with 59, it is Cummins' first bag of five or more since his 6-24 against Sri Lanka at the Gabba in January.

The 26-year-old was the chief destroyer of the Black Caps with 5-28 from 17 overs as the Black Caps slumped to a monstrous first innings deficit.

Cummins, who became the richest ever overseas Indian Premier League player last week, didn't give New Zealand an inch as he bowled with typical pace and accuracy.

Still with an innings to come to round out 2019, Cummins has 59 wickets for the year at an average of 19.3.

It was the fifth five-wicket haul of his career.

"I feel like I have been bowling really well, I was happy with how they came out," Cummins said.

The right-arm paceman formed a lethal combination with fellow quicks James Pattinson (3-34) and Mitchell Starc (2-30) as off-spinner Nathan Lyon bowled just nine overs and didn't take a wicket.
