New Zealand quick Trent Boult will miss the first test against Australia after failing to overcome a side strain.

Boult got through two net sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday but has been deemed unfit to play.

He'll be replaced by Lockie Ferguson, who will be right into the action in his test debut, after New Zealand lost the toss and were sent into bowl first at Optus Stadium.

The Blackcaps side is otherwise unchanged from the one that drew with England in Hamilton, while Australia field the same XI that beat Pakistan last week.

It marks the first time since the ball-tampering saga Australia have kept an unchanged side for three successive tests.

With hot weather of 40 degrees expected over the first three days, the pitch is expected to be rock hard before cracking up later in the test.

"If anything, I think it looks better than last year. We will probably see a bit of cracking in it," Australia's captain Tim Paine said.

Boult's absence will come as a massive blow to the Blackcaps.

He was expected to be a threat to Australia's top order, having taken 16 wickets in two pink-ball Tests at an average of 12.50.

In his place, Ferguson is one of the fastest bowlers in the world, having regularly hit speeds of around 150km/h in this year's one-day international World Cup.

"Trent is not quite right, so Lockie Ferguson is coming in," New Zealand captain Kane Williamson said.

"Hopefully he does really well and I'm sure he will enjoy it."

Australia are undefeated in six day-night tests, while New Zealand are playing just their third in Perth.

Meanwhile the Blackcaps are going in search of their first series win in Australia in 34 years.
