Manchester City bounced back from their damaging derby defeat to Manchester United last week by demolishing Arsenal 3-0 in the English Premier League.
City's loss to United last week effectively ended their title defence as they slipped to 14 points behind Liverpool.
But they at least responded in style as Kevin De Bruyne's double and Raheem Sterling ripped the Gunners to shreds in the first half at the Emirates Stadium on Monday (NZ time).
De Bruyne's first came after only 89 seconds and then the Belgian laid the second on a plate for Sterling.
Arsenal, still managerless and under the temporary charge of Freddie Ljungberg, had no answer and a brilliant De Bruyne second in the 40th minute saw them get roundly booed off at half-time.
Earlier, Jan Vertonghen scored in injury time to give Tottenham Hotspur a 2-1 win at Wolverhampton and move Jose Mourinho's side into fifth in the English Premier League.
The Belgian defender headed the winner from Christian Eriksen's corner after Adama Traore had cancelled out Lucas Moura's early opener for Spurs.
The result sent Tottenham one point ahead of Manchester United, who were held to a 1-1 draw by Everton.
"It was a very difficult game - we know how good Wolves are," Vertonghen said.
"People talk about the top six but they're very close. They show it in the league every week. They're a very good side."
Moura put Spurs in front after just eight minutes and Eric Dier hit the post before Traore, who was a threat throughout with his pace, smashed in the equaliser 23 minutes from time.
But Vertonghen took advantage of slack defending in the box to head in the winner and end Wolves' 11-match unbeaten run.
Manchester United are a point behind in sixth but they needed an equaliser from Mason Greenwood to earn a point at home to Everton.
Everton took the lead on 36 minutes when, after Dominic Calvert-Lewin jumped with David De Gea to contest a corner, Victor Lindelof put the ball into his own net.
But Greenwood levelled the scores to give United a share of the points.
"We're disappointed we didn't get three points," said Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer..
"We didn't have the ideas to win it towards the end. We kept them on the back foot and if any team was going to win it it was us.
Everton are now three points above the relegation zone, having added a draw to their win in Duncan Ferguson's two games in temporary charge.
"I am delighted at the moment," Ferguson said.
"We beat a top team in Chelsea and now we've come to Old Trafford and got a draw."
