Sir Peter Snell's athletics achievements will be celebrated at the annual Night of 5s event in Auckland later this week.
The triple Olympic gold medallist died on Friday (NZT) at his home in Texas, aged 80.
Former teammate and close friend Barry Magee will speak at the Bays Athletics event at AUT Millennium in Rosedale on Friday night.
Magee won a marathon bronze medal at the 1960 Rome Olympics and trained with Snell under legendary coach Arthur Lydiard.
Snell, who was also a double Commonwealth champion and held several world records, was part of a golden era of New Zealand distance running under Lydiard's guidance. He was named New Zealand's 'Sports Champion of the 20th Century' and was the first inductee into the NZ Sports Hall of Fame.
The Night of 5s will feature 180 athletes competing over short and middle distances, including the 800m, one of Sir Peter's specialist events.
Snell's family will hold a small memorial service with close friends and family near their US residence, but there wouldn't be a public service.
