Kiwi Finn sailor Josh Junior has staked his claim for the sole spot at next year's Tokyo Olympics by becoming the first Kiwi in 63 years to win the World Championships.

Needing a top-seven finish in the medal race in Melbourne to claim the title, he crossed the line in seventh place to prove his worth to the Olympic selectors.

Junior is up against teammate Andy Maloney for the sole spot for Tokyo, Maloney finished sixth overall at the Championships.

Junior held a 16-point lead heading into the final day after claiming a top-three finish in four of the nine qualifying races.

The 29-year-old was the New Zealand representative at the 2016 Rio Olympics, where he finished seventh.
