The All Blacks Sevens were way too good for Wales, running out 43-7 winners in the tournament opener.
After five minutes, the Welsh were on even terms at 7-7, but conceded six unanswered tries - including two to second-half replacement Akuila Rokolisoa - as the contest became a rout.
The NZ men face Canada at 12:07am Sunday (NZ time) and wrap up their pool scheduled against Argentina at 6:05am. The Argentinians accounted for their North American rivals 33-21 in their only outing of the day.
In other men's pool games, Fiji bounced back from their early exit in Dubai to trounce United States 28-14, Kenya toppled Samoa 24-19, while Scotland scored in the final seconds to edge England 26-24.
New Zealand would cross over with the pool containing Scotland, England, France and Spain in quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, the Black Ferns began their title defence with a 40-0 romp over hosts South Africa, who are not yet regular participants on the IRB World Series.
Alena Saili scored a brace of tries, with Tyla Nathan-Wong, Shiray Kaka, Gayle Broughton and Mahina Paul also crossing.
The NZ women take on Fiji at 9:35pm Saturday (NZ time) and complete their pool schedule against Russia at 3:25am.
The Fijians prevailed 38-19 over Russia in their tournament opener, while Australia, USA, France and Canada also tasted victory.
