New Zealand's Michael Venus will face defending champion Tennys Sandgren in the first round of the men's ASB Classic in Auckland.
Venus, who is a doubles specialist, was given a late wildcard entry into the singles draw, and faces a tough challenge if he wants to reach the next round.
The winner of that match will face fourth seed John Isner in the next round.
Venus, 32, last played a singles match in October 2018 in a Davis Cup tie against Korea.
The men's draw was dealt a blow on Friday when top seed Daniil Medvedev withdrew due his commitments in the ATP Cup in Sydney.
"We would have loved to have him here, but that's the nature of sport," said tournament director Karl Budge.
Italian Fabio Fognini was promoted to the top seed as a result. The top four seeds get a first round bye in the tournament.
Venus and John Peers are the top seeds in the doubles draw.
