Tragedy has struck the North Harbour Water Polo Club as one of its most talented players died at training on Thursday night.
A club statement said 19-year-old Rowan Brown became ill while training ahead of a senior men's session.
The "hard-working" talent was said to be a familiar face at the club.
Brown's death was announced by the club in a Facebook post on Friday.
"We are devastated to announce the death last night [Thursday] of Rowan Brown - one of our most talented and hard-working players and much-loved club member," the post said.
"Our hearts are breaking for Rowan's wonderful family.
"He was a vital member of our senior men's team and a true inspiration to so many."
A gathering was held at the AUT Millennium on Friday afternoon to pay tribute to the "remarkable young man".
