Two-time Olympic champion Mahe Drysdale appears to have the inside running on the coveted single-sculls seat again at Tokyo this year.
The veteran has been named to contest the solo event at the first two World Cup regattas in Italy and Switzerland in May, heading off younger rival Robbie Manson.
Since capturing his second Olympic gold at Rio four years ago, Drysdale, 41, has taken a back seat to Manson, who set a world record over 2000 metres, but was badly off the pace at three successive world championships.
At Ottensheim last year, Manson failed to make the 'A' final, but qualified a spot at Tokyo by winning the 'B' final.
Meanwhile, Drysdale found a position in the men's eight that failed to qualify for the Olympics and now faces an uncertain future, with a late bid still possible.
After losing his singles berth, Manson and Chris Harris has been named for double sculls. Last year, Harris and John Storey finished second in the world championship 'B' final to also qualify for Tokyo.
The men's pair of Thomas Murray and Michael Brake have been retained, after their world championship silver medals, while the successful women's squad has been retained largely unchanged.
Last year, the women's pair of Brooke Donoghue and Olivia Loe, women's double sculls of Grace Prendergast and Kerri Gowler, and women's eight all captured world titles. Emma Twigg finished runner-up in the solo event.
