Rugby: Lions, Chiefs coach Warren Gatland suggests money-spinning international tournament

Warren Gatland's certainly enjoying some extended time away from rugby.

The British & Irish Lions and Chiefs coach has had plenty of time to think outside the square about how NZ Rugby can dig itself out of the financial black hole caused by COVID-19.

"It makes sense for southern hemisphere nations to do a round-robin game against the four 'Home Nations' and maybe France," Gatland says.

Newshub understands talks are already underway at NZ Rugby about a potential one-off tournament and what that would look like.

Gatland says that sort of thinking is required to give unions the financial boost they desperately need.

"Split the revenue, potentially, for each of those nations and it's $15-20 million, and they could earn pounds," he told Newshub.

"While we're in this situation at the moment, it's about throwing lots of ideas into the mix, and finding what could create the most interest and the most revenue."
