NZ Rugby looks set to trial a 'golden point' system to decide drawn games in Super Rugby Aotearoa, confirms Highlanders coach Aaron Mauger.
Mauger has put his weight behind the concept that's been popularised by rugby league's NRL.
"It has been tabled by New Zealand Rugby and the coaches have been part of that discussion as well," Mauger says.
"I think it's a great idea - it's great for the spectacle. You can get a clear winner or loser."
Mauger says NZR has consulted coaches from all of its Super Rugby sides on the proposal, which would add even more value to supreme conditioning in what promises to be a gruelling 10-week stretch of derby games.
"It can come down to a moment… our ability to stay on for 80 minutes-plus is going to be key," he adds.
"I haven't heard anything in the last week or so... I'm not sure how far down the track it is. But we'd be supportive if that's the outcome."
All of the NZ Super Rugby franchises were involved in at least one drawn game apiece in the 2019 season.
The Crusaders recorded two - against the Sharks in Christchurch and the Stormers in Cape Town.
Crusaders coach Scott Robertson says he'd also welcome the idea of 'golden point', referring to its suggestion as a "great call", in particular for what it could add to the spectacle.
“If there are a number of draws it could disadvantage a team quite heavily, and it’s a bit of excitement. It’s something new,’’ Robertson notes.
“It’s a brutal competition, so an extra 10 minutes is going to be more entertaining for everyone. It’s going to test your mental fortitude as well as the depth of your squad.
