Sky TV's venture into sports news has become the latest victim of the turbulent NZ media scene, with the announcement that the evening show has been axed.
On Thursday, the provider confirmed the end of the Sky Sport News evening bulletin which screened on weeknights, but that Crowd Goes Wild would return on June 2.
Sky's director of external affairs Chris Major said the service would move to its app and website.
"We are talking to our sports production teams about changes to a few of our other shows, along with the ways we produce and deliver our sport content," said Major.
"As we said to the market only this morning, like many businesses we are needing to cut costs and change the way we do things in the present environment, and we are also focused on transforming our business to ensure a sustainable future."
Sources told Newshub that the online show will go ahead with a heavily reduced staff.
Sky Sport News first went to air in September last year but has been off air since late March, as the dearth of live sports worldwide due to the COVID-19 pandemic took its toll.
In March, Sky TV offered select customers a "holiday" from its sports packages through July 1, in response to customer complaints regarding the lack of live content on offer.
The pay-TV provider has also asked investors for cash so it can sell broadband as well as television.
It wants to raise $157 million dollars through a cheap share offer, with its aim to "reward customer loyalty".
"Sky will then focus on the hundreds of thousands of New Zealand homes that are fibre ready through the ultra-fast broadband scheme but not yet connected," said chief executive Martin Stewart.
