Boxing promoter Bob Arum and Kiwi counterpart Dean Lonergan are targeting a New Zealand venue for the proposed Tyson Fury-Deontay Wilder world heavyweight title fight later this year.
Fury knocked his rival out in Februay to capture the WBC belt, after their December 2018 meeting ended in a controversial draw.
The pair are contractually tied to a trilogy fight, but plans have been stalled by the COVID-19 pandemic that has closed down sport and international borders around the world.
Arum and Lonergan have proposed bringing the bout downunder, with Sydney the initial destination, but New Zealand also looms as a potential venue, after eliminating the coronavirus.
"Dean tells me there is a possibility that New Zealand will open full stadium and spectators within a very short time," Arum has told Newshub.
"If that's the case and we get some financial support, we would be prepared to come over and do that fight."
Sydney's Bankwest Stadium looms as the most likely southern hemsiphere venue, with Lonergan the driving force behind bring the bout to this part of the world.
The former Kiwis rugby league representative previously co-managed NZ heavyweight Joseph Parker through the Duco agency, before leaving to pursue his own interests, since elevating Aussie Jeff Horn to a world welterweight title.
American Arum is also no stranger to our shores, promoting the Parker v Andy Ruiz Jnr WBO title fight at Auckland's Vector Arena in 2016.
