The Blues have ensured Beauden Barrett's tenure has begun in style, with a comfortable 30-20 win over the Hurricanes at Eden Park in their Super Rugby Aotearoa opener.
After a closely fought opening from both sides in the first half, the Blues came out strong after halftime to gain the upper hand.
The lack of discipline from the Hurricanes gave the Blues numerous penalties in kickable positions, and Otere Black - who was outstanding at pivot - made them pay, establishing a lead that became a hill too steep for the visitors to climb.
Winger Caleb Clarke was a standout for the hosts, scoring a try and constantly applying pressure, while No.8 Hoskins Sotutu led the way from the front.
Both sides came out in full force, scoring tries within the first 15 minutes of the match.
The Blues managed to cross the line first through Clarke, who carved through big gaps in the Hurricanes defence.
Hooker Dane Coles struck back just minutes later, pinning his ears for the corner from 22m to dive and score in the tackle of his former teammate Barrett, with Coles letting him know all about it afterwards.
Second-five TJ Faiane reagined the lead for the Blues, running an excellent line from close range to score near the posts.
The visitors managed to close the gap just before halftime, as Ben Lam finished on the back of a huge overlap to cut the Hurricanes' deficit to one point at the break.
The Blues seized the momentum in the second half, with Faiane kicking for Dalton Papali'i to pounce and put the hosts up 21-13.
The Hurricanes put themselves on the back foot, as they lacked discipline and gave away penalties, with Black happily obliging to the tune of three straight penalties to extend the advantage.
Replacement halfback Jamie Booth claimed a late try for the Hurricanes, but it was too little, too late.
