Super Rugby Aotearoa: Blues confirm Dan Carter signing

Former All Blacks first-five Dan Carter has confirmed he's signed for the Blues for the upcomming Super Rugby Aotearoa season.

The 38-year-old will join the side as cover for Stephen Perofeta, who is out indefinitely with a foot injury.

The Blues released a video on social media of Carter in Blues training gear, before telling the media he signed on a short-term deal.

Carter then announced he plans to help out the Blues' kickers, but admitted he was still a few weeks before he's back out on the field.

"Leon [Blues coach Leon MacDonald] is a good mate and we spoke about me helping out," he told media on Thursday

"For me it is a chance to mentor some young players and to give back to New Zealand rugby

"I have not played for several months so it will be a number of weeks before I will be ready to be considered to play. And then only if my form warrants it."

Carter will bring much-needed experience to the Blues having spent 12 years with the Crusaders where he won three Super Rugby titles in 2005, 06, and 08.

The Blues had been in talks with Carter for some time, after the Japan Top 14 season was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. He has since returned to Auckland with his family.

Rumours circulated of Carter's signing on Wednesday night when a leaked Whatsapp message was shared on social media showing Blues coach Leon MacDonald warning his players of the signing before the word got out.

MacDonald and Carter played alongside each other for Canterbury, the Crusaders and the All Blacks.

The three-time World Rugby Player of the Year left New Zealand after playing a key role in the All Blacks' 2015 World Cup victory, appearing firstly for France's Racing 92, then Japan's Kobelco Steelers.

The Blues face the Hurricanes in their opening match of Super Rugby Aotearoa on June 14 at Eden Park.
