Super Rugby Aotearoa: Blues' Patrick Tuipulotu thriving in leadership role

It's been a major factor in the Blues resurgence this year, but Patrick Tuipulotu admits he's had to grow into a leader.

Becoming the stand-alone captain after sharing the job last year has seen his own form improve and with it, the Blues' fortunes.

Tuipulotu is bringing his own style to his captaincy, just as he has with his hairdo.

"Few too many beers and ended up daring each other to get pink hair," Tuipulotu laughs.

The 27-year-old has been at the front of the Blues resurgence, gradually finding his feet in charge of a side that's finally found theirs.

"Five years ago, if I'd asked myself where I see myself in five years I wouldn't say being captain of the Blues.

"You've got to have hard conversations, but that's something I've grown into."

Tuipulotu's re-commitment to New Zealand Rugby until the 2023 World Cup reflects his desire to succeed and his newfound devotion to leadership.

It's what the franchise has been missing in the nine years since their last playoff appearance, and it's what could help them return to glory not seen since 2003.

"There's something special going on here at the Blues and I want to be part of that… it's been a learning curve for me and that's one of the bits I've enjoyed."

Tuipulotu's leadership was exemplified by an impassioned speech to the franchise after lockdown.

The sort of influence his team mates admit has been missing over the last few seasons.

"To have our leader stand up in front of the club and deliver a really important message, not so much to us as a player, but to staff and front office and everyone within the club, was a really good touch from him," Blues pivot Otere Black tells Newshub.

"Apparently there were [some tears] from the staff up the back and others who really appreciated it, which was awesome.

But while his influence grows both on and off the field, Tuipulotu will continue to take it day by day.

"I'm enjoying every journey, whether it be high or low," he adds.
