Northern Stars have thrown away a seven-goal lead to draw 46-46 with Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic in Auckland.

The first-ever draw of the ANZ Premiership competition has cost the Stars third spot on the ladder.

The revamped 2020 competition has shorter quarters and no overtime, allowing draws for the first time in competition history.

After suffering a 21-goal defeat to champions Central Pulse the night before, the Magic started well, leading by five after the first quarter, but the Stars turned that around to lead by seven heading into the final 12 minutes.

But the Magic stormed home, scoring the final six goals of the match, including a goal right on full-time to level the scores.

Magic wing attack Whitney Souness was named Player of the Match, while teammate Abigail Latu-Meafou shot at 85 percent from inside the circle.

The Stars actually shot more accurately, led by Maia Wilson's 34/37 (92 percent), but attempted less shots on goal.

The Pulse (20 points) top the table after four completed rounds with a perfect five-win record, followed by the Mystics (16), Tactix (9), Stars (8), Magic (6) and former powerhouse Southern Steel (5).
