Football: Manchester United continue Champions League charge, Leicester City remain in top four

Manchester United continued their push for Champions League qualification as Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial secured a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Friday (NZ time).

With two games remaining, United are in fifth place on 62 points, behind Leicester City on goal difference, with third-placed Chelsea on 63. United visit Leicester on the final day of the season.

Rashford put United in front on the stroke of halftime, his smart footwork sending the Palace defence the wrong way before he coolly slotted home.

Mid-table Palace thought they had drawn level in the 55th minute when Jordan Ayew slid in a low cross from Wilfried Zaha but the goal was ruled out for the tightest of offsides after a VAR review.

United made sure of victory, when Bruno Fernandes and Rashford combined smartly to feed Martial who held off Scott Dann and drove in the second.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side are now unbeaten in 19 games in all competitions

Earlier, Leicester Cityboosted their hopes of finishing ahead of United after claiming a 2-0 win over Sheffield United.

Ayoze Perez and substitute Demarai Gray found the back of the net, which means Leicester will play European football next season, but whether that's in the Champions League or Europa League remains up in the air.

Elsewhere, a late equaliser from Everton substitute Theo Walcott denied Aston Villa three points in their fight to avoid relegation from the Premier League in a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park.

After a cagey first half, Villa scored with the game's first attempt on target as centre back Ezri Konsa latched on to a Conor Hourihane free kick in the 72nd minute.

Everton struggled to create goal scoring opportunities until Andre Gomes's cross found the diminutive Walcott who headed home three minutes from time.

The result left Villa 19th in the table, three points adrift of the safety zone, having played a game more than 17th-placed Watford.

Brighton & Hove Albion all but ensured their Premier League status for another season as they held out for a 1-1 draw with Southampton at St Mary's Stadium.

Frenchman Neal Maupay gave Brighton the halftime lead but Danny Ings pulled one back in the 66th minute for Southampton, who kept up a furious second-half onslaught but were unable to convert it into a come-from-behind win.
