Super Rugby Aotearoa: Josh Ioane set to return for Highlanders against Chiefs

The Highlanders have received a timely dose of positive news, with All Blacks playmaker Josh Ioane declared fully fit to return to the field.

The one-test international is yet to make an appearance in Super Rugby Aotearoa, but will be available for selection for the clash with the Chiefs on Sunday, after recovering from his groin injury.

"He was back for training two weeks ago, but re-aggravated [the injury], so this was the first one [training] back," says coach Mark Hammett.

The question for the Highlanders is now where and how to use Ioane, in light of Mitch Hunt's impressive form in the No.10 jersey.

Before Ioane's injury, Hammett had planned to use him at first-five and Hunt at fullback for the opening round of Super Rugby Aotearoa, and he seems likely to take that approach this weekend.

"We know that he can play second-five and he's played fullback pretty competently as well, but ultimately he's a No.10," says Hammett.

That arrangement would give the southerners the dual playmaker option that has become so chic over the past year.

Hammett is full of praise for Nelson-product Hunt, who has eased into a leadership role with the team.

"He’s been really good," Hammett says. "He's a warrior - brave and always up for the challenge.

"You don't see him get flustered very often. He's a really good leader within our group.

"There’s only good things to say about Mitch. He's always trying to grow his game and those around them."

Hammett confirms flanker Dillon Hunt will also be ready to go at FMG Stadium, after suffering an eye injury during last weekend's loss to the Hurricanes.

In less encouraging injury news, halfback Kayne Hammington fractured his hand against the Hurricanes, sidelining him for the remainder of Super Rugby Aotearoa, while back Ngatungane Punivai will miss his second straight game with concussion.

On the other side of the field, the Chiefs will receive a huge boost from the return of All Blacks midfielder Anton Lienert-Brown, who's recovered from a head injury.

Both teams' selections for game day will be confirmed on Friday.
