Kiwi Scott Dixon still holds a healthy IndyCar champion lead, after finishing fifth in the second race at Worldwide Technology Raceway in Illinois.
After winning Sunday's opening race to claim his 50th career victory, Dixon produced another strong performance around the oval track, with a sixth IndyCar crown in sight.
The 200-lap race was won by defending champion Josef Newgarden, but Dixon still holds a 96-point lead over his American rival.
The race ended under caution, when Indianapolis 500 winner Takuma Sato hit the wall with three laps remaining, as Newgarden claimed his 16th career victory and second this season.
Three races remain, although a postponed Mid-Ohio doubleheader could yet find its way back onto the calendar next month or early November.
Even though Newgarden faces an uphill battle to catch Dixon, he's not giving up just yet.
"We can't give up on it yet," he says."We've been bitten by bad luck this year, and the yellows have gone against us probably three or four out of eight races.
"Sometimes it comes your way, sometimes it doesn't, but that's racing. You have to hopefully get on a good cycle and maybe this will be a good kick-start for the end of the season for us."
There are currently no races scheduled again until early October, with a doubleheader at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the Harvest Auto Racing Classic next on the schedule.
