A nightmare second round saw Kiwi golfer Ryan Fox finish near the bottom of the standings at the US Open at Winged Foot on Saturday (NZ time).
In windy conditions at one of the most challenging golf courses in the world, Fox shot a round score of 15 over par 85 to sit 19 over after two rounds in a tie for 140th.
Fellow Kiwi Danny Lee survived the cut after his second-round score of five over 75, where he sits in a tie for 33rd.
Many big-name players missed the cut with Fox inclduing defending champion Gary Woodland, PGA Championship winner Colin Morikawa, world No.1 Dustin Johnson, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Serio Garcia.
"It's a terrific place to play golf and I'm appreciative of the opportunity to have been able to compete here and I'm disappointed I didn't play better," said Mickelson.
Masters champion Woods (missed the cut for the eighth time in his last 15 majors after a round during which he made five bogeys and two double-bogeys over a miserable 11-hole run.
"Physically it was frustrating that I didn't drive the ball as well as I needed to," said Woods.
"Iron play was pretty much the way it has been. It's been good, and I finally putted well. But on this golf course it's imperative that you hit fairways, and I did not do that."
Winged Foot proved to be a stern test as Bryson DeChambeau (68), Hideki Matsuyama (69) and Bubba Watson (69) were the only players from a 144-player field to break par.
Dechambeau is in second on three under, one shot behind leader Patrick Reed, while Matsuyama is tied for seventh and Watson tied for 12th.
Only six golfers, including overnight leader Juston Thomas, have scores lower than even par.
