A shocking try call has overshadowed a rare Canterbury Bulldogs win, as they moved off the bottom of the NRL ladder with a 26-16 win over South Sydney Rabbitohs.
Midway through the first half, Rabbitohs winger Jaxson Paulo crossed for what seemed a regulation try and referee Ashley Klein awarded it without consulting the bunker.
But replays showed Paulo's right foot slid into touch as he grounded the ball, with the sideline official standing in a perfect position to spot the mistake.
Lead commentator Brenton Speed suggested the bunker should have the power to overturn such an obvious mistake.
Luckily, the try did not change the result, with the Bulldogs producing their third win of the season and relegating Brisbane Broncos to last place on the NRL ladder.
The Bulldogs raced out to a 20-0 and the Rabbitohs couldn't get themselves back in the contest, as their hopes for a top four finish ended.
Two of the Bulldogs' first-half tries came with a one-man advantage, after Rabbitohs forward Jayden Su'A was sin-binned for a high tackle on Lachlan Lewis, forcing the halfback out of the match.
The win ended a seven-game losing streak for Steve Georgallis' side, who last won in July against Newcastle Knights.
"That was seven weeks in the making, that game," says Georgallis. "I'm just so proud of the 17 players.
"We had a few injuries there, lost Lachie Lewis with his kicking game. Jake [Averillo] played injured that whole second half, but to the kid's credit, he stayed on the football field.
"They just kept on turning up in defence. Souths chased us that second half, possession swung, momentum swung, but they just kept on turning up for each other.
"We talked about it all week - don't leave the game with regrets."
To avoid the wooden spoon, the Bulldogs will need the Broncos to lose their final two games of the season against Parramatta Eels and North Queensland Cowboys. The Bulldogs face the top-of-the-table Panthers in their last game.
