US Open 2020: Daniil Medvedev eases past JJ Wolf into fourth round

Russian Daniil Medvedev has cruised into the fourth round at the US Open after demolishing American J.J. Wolf 6-3 6-3 6-2 on Sunday (NZ time).

The third seed seized the early momentum, breaking Wolf's serve for a 3-2 lead in the first set in which he committed just two unforced errors in a show of near-flawless play.

Russia's 2019 US Open runner-up won the first break point in the second set after a pair of unforced errors from his opponent and appeared totally in control as he fired off eight aces, including one to close out the set.

Wolf handed Medvedev his first service game loss of the tournament with a break in the second set, matching the hard-hitting Russian's power, but a flurry of unforced errors - 41 in  the match compared to 10 from Medvedev - proved his undoing.

"I'm sure he's going to be climbing up the rankings," Medvedev said of his Wolf. "I did everything I could for it to be tough [for him]."

Elsewhere, Australia's Alex de Minaur recovered from a second-set bagel to beat 11th seed Karen Khachanov 6-4 0-6 4-6 6-3 6-1.

De Minaur, 21, broke his Russian opponent twice to take the opening set but went off the boil in the second, winning just five points on his first serve.

Khachanov extended his advantage by winning the third set before De Minaur suddenly found a second wind to take a 3-0 lead in the fourth, pulling away to seal victory in just over three hours on Court five.

De Minaur has reached the last-16 at Flushing Meadows for the second consecutive year and will meet Canadian Vasek Pospisil, who overcame Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut.

Felix Auger-Aliassime eased into the last-16 of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career with a convincing 6-1 6-0 6-4 win over France's Corentin Moutet.

The Canadian youngster will play the winner of the match between second seed Dominic Thiem and 2014 champion Marin Cilic.

Sixth seed Matteo Berrettini beat Casper Ruud 6-4 6-4 6-2, firing 40 winners and 13 aces past the Norwegian to set up a last-16 encounter with Russian 10th seed Andrey Rublev.
