Blackcaps 2020/21: Fast bowler Kyle Jamieson keen to build on dream summer

Kyle Jamieson may have been the find of last summer, but the towering fast bowler believes he's still on the outer when it comes to Blackcaps selection.

The 2m tall Aucklander made an instant impact during his debut series against India, but with a new season dawning, he wants to become a permanent fixture in the national side.

While most people are eager to see the back of 2020, Jamieson's certainly not one of them.

"Everyone's sort of saying 2020's not a great year and I was like, 'it's actually been one of the better years of my life'."

That's because he's not likely to ever forget it.

A fortnight after a dream start to his one-day career, Jamieson was dismissing the world's best batsman - Indian skipper Virat Kohli - in a test.

"It was kind of a nice chance to reflect on what happened, and I guess all the time and work that had gone in before that," he tells Newshub. "It's sunk in now, but I guess with a new season, it's time to start again and push forward."

And Jamieson feels he must - nine wickets at an average of 16 runs for his first two test matches are not enough for him to think he's ahead of Southee, Boult and Wagner in the pecking order.

"Things went pretty well last year and I was pretty happy, but I still feel like I'm in the chasing pack for that team," he says.

Jamieson's desire to make the test XI is obvious to his Auckland coaches before their first match of the season.

"He's been fantastic around the group in this pre-season," says Aces coach Doug Watson. "His intensity and his training levels have definitely ramped up from last season.

And Jamieson's not just putting in work with the ball - becoming a genuine all-rounder could be his point of difference.

"That's what I'm trying to chase and if I continue to work towards that, hopefully that will pan out alright," he says.

Jamieson's clearly pumped up to make an even bigger impact this summer.
